From the very first page, even before the introduction and first chapter, I was completely captivated by Hajj: Lectures by Imam W. Deen Mohammed. The passion emanating from each page resonated deeply with me. While the book discusses Hajj, it transcends the typical guide on how to perform the pilgrimage. Instead, it delves into the profound impact and spiritual power of the Hajji and those eager to make sacrifices for the sake of Allah.
Despite its dated cover, format, and typesetting, the book exudes a unique energy. As a collection of lectures, it possesses an everyday conversational style, which feels more personal and engaging compared to the more academic and rigid styles we're used to. This approach made me feel as though I was sitting in the presence of Imam W. Deen Mohammed. I appreciated the authenticity and honesty of his words; even when they meandered off-topic, the reflections were filled with wisdom and insight. Imam W. Deen Mohammed facilitated a shift within the Nation of Islam, moving the community into mainstream Islam, and I can see why people valued and adhered to his opinions and leadership.
I felt this was a book of hope. It teaches that following Allah’s way brings peace and that sacrificing what we love for Allah and shedding earthly attachment brings ultimate liberation.
Reading this book made me eagerly anticipate Dhūl Ḥijja and Eid al-Adha and made me contemplate the sacrifices I will make for Allah this year.
