Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow’s story, Sister Friend, is a delightful and impactful picture book about Ameena, a girl who struggles to fit in with her classmates and find her voice. When a new girl named Sundus arrives, Ameena notices her hijab and is eager to befriend her. However, Ameena finds it difficult to express herself and make a connection. One day, Ameena discovers the right words to share with Sundus.
Thompkins-Bigelow never disappoints with her stories, and this is another great example of compelling storytelling. I particularly love how Thompkins-Bigelow highlights Muslim joy. The illustrations by Maydani are charming and endearing, and capture the characters’ emotional states and their journey toward friendship. This book shows the importance of feeling welcomed, and it highlights how Muslim children can learn to connect with one another.
