Course Description:
Students will develop foundational listening, speaking, reading and basic writing skills in Somali. The course emphasizes everyday communication, culturally appropriate language use, and essential vocabulary. By the end of the beginner module, students will be able to engage in simple conversations, introduce themselves, describe familiar people and objects and demonstrate an introductory understanding of Somali language.
Objectives

Listening: students listen to simple dialogues and classroom instructions and participate in small group discussions.

Speaking: Students discuss themselves and their own lives, as well as other basic cultural topics.

Reading: Students analyze the content of Af - Soomaali 1, 2, 3, 4 books and other short texts.

Writing: Students write short compositions, letters, journal entries, and short descriptions.

Grammatical Topics: gender, articles, subject pronouns, present tense, negation patterns, commands

Vocabulary Topics: greetings and expressions of courtesy, numbers, family vocabulary, house and furniture vocabulary, descriptive adjectives, daily routines and activities, food vocabulary

Culture: Students acquire cultural information for the purpose of understanding and appreciating the language, practices, and perspectives of Somali cultures.
